1) They can be used, as Ron Popeil said, in a "Set it and Forget it!" way. When "installing" these laces, you put the shoes on, then lace to the tightness you prefer. You then set the "lock" on the lace, cut the extra lace a few inches from the lock, and attach the end clip. To loosen the laces, you then just move the lock down the lace, and to tighten, move the lock up the laces. It is EASY, and once the laces are set, there is VERY little that has to be done.
2) They are adjustable (to a point), so if you are wearing thicker socks, or have to wear an ankle brace while running, there is room for expansion.
3) They **do not** come undone while you are running. They stay fastened! How often does that happen with regular laces? Almost never!
4) If you have a sock slip out of place while running, you won't lose much time at all if you stop, loosen your shoe, fix your sock, and retighten your shoe. It takes mere seconds to do.
5) You can EASILY adjust these, even with frozen fingers. Have you ever tried to untie a knot or retie your running shoes in the winter, when your fingers are frozen? It is very difficult to untie and tie laces with frozen fingers, which can lead to minutes of lost time. Lock laces are easy to manipulate, even with frozen fingers, so that risk is much lower.
6) The elastic laces offer compression over the entire top of the foot. That's a VERY good thing for blood flow to the muscles.
7) The laces are water-resistant, so splashing mud doesn't make your laces filthy. If they DO get dirty, though, they are machine washable, so they can be cleaned up easily.
8) They are CUTE. The lock laces come in lots of fun colors-- white, black, gray, bright blue, bright yellow, red, orange, brown, pale pink, chartreuse, reflective olive green, reflective blue, reflective pale blue, reflective gray, reflective purple, reflective bright green, and reflective bright pink.
9) You can get the laces SUPER-TIGHT, which helps with heel slippage and blister development.
10) They last! I often kick my shoes towards the wall when I get home from a run, and the plastic clip has hit the wall many, many times. It has yet to break! They also don't rot or ravel over time. I've only had to replace my lock laces when I replace running shoes because each set is made to conform to a particular shoe. While I *might* be able to reuse the laces if I buy an identical running shoe, I cannot because I change " shoe models" often.
I would HIGHLY recommend Lock Laces to anyone who needs an easy-to-use lace. I *wish* I had thought to use them in my shoes when I had to wear a splint on my wrist for two months. It was very difficult to tie my shoes, but it would have been easy to just use lock laces!
I started my elastic journey with another brand of laces sold here on Amazon, from "The Friendly Swede". To make a long story short, I think there is a reason they sell 5 pairs at a time. I am a software developer and as such have to have everything perfect. "The Friendly Swede" brand requires you to tie a knot at the end after lacing them up. So I did and cut the remaining laces. After about an hour I realized they were way too tight. But I cut them too short to make them comfortable. Since they were cut, I had to start over with a 2nd pair. After I screwed up my 3rd, I said enough is enough and ordered a pair of Lock Laces. At least I would have to tie knots (I have to have them at the exact length which I found hard to do when tying knots.
Now I was a master lacing the new laces up. Had lots of practice. Fit great but as other reviewer here have mentioned, the locks don't really lock well. Every time I took off my shoes, the tongue of the shoe would push the lock forward a bit. No big deal until I went to put the shoes back on. I would have to spend an extra minute or two adjusting them to straighten them out. After a week this became too frustrating so I took them off and went back to "The Friendly Swede". Well, I cut them too short...
I gave up on the idea all together and put my original laces back on. Well, if you ever wore elastic laces and went back to regular laces you know what I mean when I say they now sucked. I mean I have been wearing normal laces all my life. But now I have been spoiled by the elastic dream.
I read a few reviewers here (actually many) who had problems putting on the clips or having the clips come off. And I had problems with the lock moving forward and the actual look of the clip. I had one extra pair of Lock Laces I was getting ready to return but I figured I would give it one more shot.
This time I laced them up, put the locks on, but instead of cutting them and putting on the clips, I just tied them like a normal shoe. IT WORKED. The lock can no longer move forward when I take off my shoes. It also gave me a few days to totally adjust them without having to worry about them being too short. I didn't have the ugly looking clip and the shoe looks like any other shoe, accept I can slip it on and off with ease. Plus, it won't be an issue when I put them on my next pair of shoes.
So, for anyone here purchasing the Lock Laces, I would suggest doing what I did. Don't cut them. Lace them up, put on the locks and tie it like a normal shoe. Even if you later decide to cut them and put on the clips, you would have had a few days to make sure they are comfortable before doing so. But if you are like me, you'll just leave it tied like normal. Once tied, they act just like the clips. Shoes slip on and off the the tie doesn't come undone due to the bungy material.
Hoping for a pair that included Velcro straps, I could not find them in wide. So I next came across Lock Laces.
Where have these been all my adult life?! These work far better than I had hoped, and stayed snug all day. I like them so much that I reordered immediately for other shoes I have with laces.
Good job!!
